Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has opened up about the ‘toughest moment’ of his career while discussing his future at Old Trafford. After gaining prominence at Leicester City and starting strongly at Manchester United, Maguire became a key player for Gareth Southgate’s England team. Despite facing criticism and a lack of confidence last season, the 31-year-old had a strong finish to the 2023-24 campaign and appeared set to join the England squad for Euro 2024 before an injury sidelined him from the tournament.
Maguire described missing out on Southgate’s squad as the toughest moment of his career: “It was a really tough moment, probably the toughest I’ve faced so far,” he said. “I had worked hard all year to be in top form for the big games and the Euros, feeling both physically and mentally prepared to perform at the highest level. Facing an injury setback was incredibly hard. Watching the Euros while not being part of it was difficult, but with the support of my friends and family, I managed to get through it and enjoy my holidays, despite the mental strain. I’ve always been a huge England fan, so not being there was especially tough.”
Maguire, who was stripped of the Manchester United captaincy last summer, has been rumored to be leaving the club. However, he stated that he isn’t considering an exit unless the club indicates they want him to leave. He added, “Unless the club tells me I’m up for sale or no longer wanted, everything I’ve heard and experienced suggests I’m part of the future here. It’s time to focus on making the club successful again and competing for major trophies, which is what the club demands.”
